Kinetoscope

KINETOSCOPE

CHRISTINA ANGELINA + EASE ONE

The Kinetoscope is a circular mural inside an abandoned water tank in Slab City, California.

Visitors must climb a staircase to the top of the 15-foot tank and descend a ladder into the structure. Once inside, amplified sound reverberation accompanies two series of artistically rendered female faces. Faces are captured in a variety of freeze frames and combined to create motion, inspired by the work of photographer Eadweard Muybridge, the designer of the original Kinetoscope.

Each face is imbued with a specific emotion tied to a meaningful moment in artist Chrstina Angelina’s life. The subtle interconnectedness of these moments creates a sense of "magic" in its movement as each form contributes to the natural flow of the piece. Her incorporation of totem animals continues through with the inclusion of raven and rattlesnake skulls.

Faces sit atop a ghostwritten blend of Eastern/Western writing styles by Ease One. These hidden words are the lyrics to Society by Eddie Vedder. A limited color palette subtly unifies elements of figuration, lettering and graf futurism in a sophisticated, stylized manner.

Think Tank

THINK TANK

CHRISTINA ANGELINA + EASE ONE

Think Tank, the second and final tank in the series was more trying than the first. A scissor lift was brought in, a generator and paint sprayer were staked out, and the truck bed was overflowing with crates of spray paint.

Nature flexed, flinging radioactive particles at unfathomable angles in 35+ MPH wind, amid 100+ degree days. The duo refused to back down and finished a week later, victorious in artistic execution.

Ease One imbued the circular concrete walls with cascading paint drips in shades of blue, emotional hues and overlaid further lyrics to Society in perfected, haunting calligraphy.

Angelina finished the piece off with two visceral feminine paintings. The transformed abandoned World War II water tank is distant but distinguishable from the main road into Slab City.

Icy and Sot

I WANT YOU TO PANIC

ICY + S0T

I Want You To Panic disintegrated in the 'last free place on Earth' known as Slab City, California.

Done by Iranian brothers Icy and Sot, a duo exiled from their own country for their ability to encourage activism through their art, the work demands we step outside of ourselves and reflect on the destructive path of our planet.

Our individual actions feed the powers that be and contribute to how the greater collective is run. Since the shift is gradual we remain comfortable and oblivious to how necessary it is for us to change. If we don’t, we will ruin any chance of sustaining future life on the Earth.

Nomad Clan

FUELED BY GREED

NOMAD CLAN + EASE ONE

Fueled by Greed blasts capitalistic ideations and showcases a dark reminder of our misplaced value system. Honest and direct, Nomad Clan and Ease One leave no room to question the undercurrent of society.

Money is the root of corruption, exploitation, class warfare, illness, extortion, climate change—the list of negative results runs on. The entire globe centers upon this exchange, overlooking holistic harmony in favor of selfish gain.

Humankind knows the effects are destructive, but the modus operandi has been so engrained across generations it blinds consideration of better alternatives. Society only unites to accept the twisted game that promises complete destruction.

SALUS POPULI SUPREMA LEX ESTO

FAITH 47

Salus Populi Suprema Lex Esto is in
Skid Row, Los Angeles. The large-scale public installation adorns the city wall, giving a monumental space to some of America’s most marginalized people; the homeless. Skid Row is home to one of the largest populations of homeless people in the United States, with an estimated 2,500 people living on the streets within its .4 square mile radius. The title of the work, which translates to “the welfare of the people shall be the supreme law,” is a critique on the capitalistic dream, which lacks institutional empathy for non-active participants.

As Faith explains, “the work is a continuation of a recent video installation in jacksonville, florida titled ‘by virtue of.’ we’re taking a deeper look at the blind spot in which we as a society fail to engage on a humanistic level with those less fortunate.”

She believes a healthy society should provide a wide range of services to assist and help its citizens live a humane and dignified life. access to clean drinking water, education, healthcare and shelter should be fundamental priorities.
