Korean artist Mong Sang fuels each of her digital creations through pure, unbridled emotion. “First, I play my favorite song so I can focus on my feelings. Then, I ask myself a lot of questions about the particular emotion I want to put into the work, and engross myself in what I wish to express.”
She ranges from emptiness and betrayal to excitement and desire in a striking, otherworldly body of work that chooses a natural color palette to provide a constant mysterious undertone.

How did you express yourself creatively as a child?
I’ve had a desire to create and complete something of my own ever since I was young. In elementary school, I made a cute character who represented me and enjoyed creating several different illustration styles a day. I also made stickers of my character.
어렸을 때 자신을 어떻게 창의적으로 표현했나요?
어렸을 때부터 저만의 무언가를 만들고 완성하고 싶은 마음이 있었어요. 초등학생는 때 저를 대표하는 귀여운 캐릭터를 만들어서 하루에도 몇 가지 다른 스타일의 일러스트를 그리는 걸 즐겼고, 캐릭터 스티커를 만들기도 했었어요.

Who was the first artist you remember being inspired by?
I was really inspired by Jang Koal in Korea. I remember being shocked when I saw her illustration at the age of 16-17.

어렸을때 한국 일러스트레이터 ‘장콸’ 에게 많은 영감을 받았었어요. 16~17세 때 그 작가의 일러스트를 보고 충격을 받았던 기억이 납니다.

Was there a defining moment you felt called to art?
It's only when I'm really enjoying myself painting—when I get goosebumps during some parts in the process—and feel really empty and sad when I finish, that I can define it as an art I really love.

그림을 그리면서 저도 모르게 소름이 돋을 때, 또 작업을 끝낸 후 정말 공허하고 슬펐을 때 비로소 내가 정말 좋아하는 예술을 하고 있구나 라고 느낍니다.

I've shared it on Facebook since I was 20 years old, so about 7 years.

MONG SANG: THROUGH THE YEARS
Are you a fulltime independent artist? What, if any, obstacles have you encountered in pursuing this?
Yes. In fact, every moment seems to be an obstacle, considering the reality.
Artists with unique styles like mine find it hard to earn a regular income, so it’s hard to make a living as a full-time artist. I don't always have enough time to create because I must do other things to survive.
I still continue to create because it's so much fun.
전업 독립 예술가이신가요? 이것을 추구하는 데 어떤 장애물이 있었나요?
네. 사실 현실적인 부분을 고려하면 매 순간이 장애물인 것 같아요. 저같이 뚜렷한 스타일이 있는 아티스트들은 정기적인 수입 으로만 생계를 유지하기 어렵고, 그로인해 다른 일을 병행하기 때문에 창작할 수 있는 시간적여유가 부족한 것 같아요.
이런 현실적인 점들을 제외하곤 창작하는 일은 너무나도 즐겁기 때문에 계속해서 작업을 할 생각이에요.

What are your personal standards for a piece that you create?
I really value the completeness and delicacy of the work. I make it my personal standard to express all the composition in a dense way. I also think it's important to express my inner world and thoughts in a dreamy atmosphere that’s visually beautiful.
작가님이 만드는 작품에 대한 개인적인 기준은 무엇인가요?
작품의 완성도와 섬세함을 정말 중요하게 생각해요. 작품 속 모든 구성 들을 밀도있게 표현 하곤 해요. 또 저의 내면세계와 생각들을 몽환적인 분위기로, 보는이들로 하여금 시각적으로 아름답게 그리는걸 중요하게 생각하고 있어요.
You draw upon internal feeling states to inspire your work. Can you describe some of your methods and techniques for turning emotion into art?
First, I play my favorite song so that I can focus on my feelings. Then I ask myself a lot of questions about what emotions I want to put into the work, and engross in the particular emotions I wish to express. So far, my emotional range includes sadness, vanity, betrayal, loneliness, anger, doubt, love, emptiness, excitement and desire.
I also draw in detail the flow of light that can beautifully express the emotions, and emphasize the eyes of the character.
영감을 받기위해 감정을 예술로 승화 시키는 방법과 기술이 있나요?
우선 좋아하는 노래를 틀고, 작품에 어떤 감정을 불어넣고 싶은지 스스로에게 많은 질문하는 과정을 거쳐요. 작품에 담아내고 싶은 그때 그때의 감정들에 몰두한 후 큰 틀을 잡고 인물의 표정과 눈빛, 손짓, 분위기의 디테일을 연구하고 있어요.

Which aspects of yourself do you reveal most through your art?
My most vulnerable and sensitive sides. I usually express emotions that are hard to reveal outside of my real self. Whether it's sadness, anger, joy, or loneliness, I express honest feelings as they are.

저의 가장 연약하고 예민한 부분을 드러내는 것 같아요. 제 실제 모습 밖으로 드러내기 힘든 감정을 주로 표현해요. 그게 외로움, 분노, 기쁨이든, 있는 그대로의 솔직한 감정을 표현해내고 있어요.
What are some of the major life experiences behind your work?
No matter who I meet, what I see, whatever I do, I try to gain as much artistic inspiration as I can.

누구를 만나든, 무엇을 보든, 무엇을 하든지 예술적인 영감을 최대한 많이 얻으려고 노력하고 있어요.
FEEL YOUR BREATH - MONG SANG
How deep is your connection to the characters you create? Do you imagine worlds for them?
Rather than imagine a world for them, I think they exist to express what I imagine and feel. The characters I create come alive through my feelings and thoughts, and live another unknown life in the painting.
작가님이 만든 인물과 얼마나 깊은 관계가 있나요? 그들을 위한 세상을 상상하곤 하나요?
그들을 위한 세상을 상상한다기 보다, 제가 상상하고 느낀것들을 표현 하기위해 그들이 존재한다고 생각해요. 제가 만든 인물은 제 감정과 생각으로 인해 생명이 생기고, 작품 속 또 다른 미지의 삶에서 새로운 이야기를 만들어가며 살아간다고 생각하고 있어요.
What inspires your color palette?
I used to gain a lot of inspiration from nature, but lately my inspiration comes from insects and marine animals. When I observe their dreamy atmosphere and intense yet unique colors, I fall in love with them. Natural colors, not artificial colors, seem to make viewers feel mysterious and stable.

예전엔 자연에서 많은 영감을 받았는데, 요즘은 곤충이나 해양 동물에서도 많은 영감을 얻는 것 같아요. 그들이 가진 몽환적인 분위기와 강렬하면서도 독보적인 컬러를 보면 저도 모르게 빠져버리게 되는 것 같아요. 인공적인 색감이 아닌 자연 그대로의 색감은 보는이들로 하여금 신비로움과 안정적인 느낌을 받게 하는 것 같아요.

What has your experience been like in the web3/NFT space?
Similar to other artists, I’ve received many offers from various companies and worked on NFTs. I made a story comparing the process of a vulnerable woman growing up by spreading her hidden wings over time to transform into a butterfly, but in the end, I couldn't mint because of the company's circumstances. It was very disappointing, but it wasn’t a bad experience because I received a good offer from a fashion brand due to the painting.
web3/NFT 공간에서 어떤 경험을 하셨나요?
여느 아티스트들과 비슷하게 저도 여러회사에서 많은 제의도 받았었고 nft 작업도 했었어요. 여리고 약했던 여성이 시간이 지남에 따라 숨겨둔 날개를 펼치며 성장해가는 과정을 나비에 비유한 스토리로 만들었지만 결국 회사 사정으로 인해 민팅을 못했어요. 굉장히 아쉬웠지만 그 작업으로 인해 패션 브랜드와 함께 작업 했던 경험이 생겼어요. 무슨 일이던 최악은 없다고 생각이 드는 계기였어요.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I work about 10 hours a day, so my frequency of new work uploaded to social media is fast. I spend a lot of time improving the quality of the work, but people see how often I upload and seem to think that I complete the work very easily in a few days. In reality, I’m not painting quickly, just spending a lot of time on the work. hahaha
대부분의 사람들이 작가님에 대해 모르는 것은 무엇이라고 생각하시나요?
저는 하루에 기본 10시간 정도는 작업하다보니 그림 퀄리티에 비해 작업 속도가 조금 빠른편인데, 그래서 그런지 sns에 그림 업로드 속도가 빠른 편 인 것 같아요. 하지만 그만큼 그림 퀄리티를 올리기 위해서 시간을 많이 투자하는데, 몇몇 분들은 제 작업 업로드 속도를 보고 제가 그림을 며칠안에 아주 쉽게 완성한다고 생각하는 것 같아요. 사실 작업에 시간을 정말 많이 투자하는 것 뿐이지 결코 제가 빨리 그리는게 아닌 것 같아요 하하
DISPOSABLE - MONG SANG
What does your dream project look like?
I want to make a huge project with my favorite fashion brand or singer. If my collaborative work debuts behind a singer on stage, I would feel like I achieved my dream.
I also want to make a huge series of works inspired by deep-sea marine life, insects, and nature and exhibit them in a wide park with various artists.
작가님의 꿈의 프로젝트는 어떤 모습인가요?
제가 평소에 정말 좋아하는 패션브랜드나, 정말 좋아하는 가수와 같이 거대한 프로젝트를 만들어보고 싶어요. 그 아티스트의 공연장 뒤에 제 작업과 콜라보한 그림이 나온다면 정말 꿈을 이룬 기분일 것 같아요. 워낙 패션과 음악에도 관심이 많거든요.
또는 심해 해양생물이나 곤충에 영감을 받은 그림들을 시리즈로 만들어서 다른 작가님들과 규모있는 전시도 해보고 싶어요.
If you could design a world of your own, what would it be like?
The weather is always clear, the sky is a mixture of sky blue and pink, luxuriant trees are everywhere, and flowers are blooming everywhere. I hope it is a world where we can fly in the sky and communicate with wild animals. Also, I hope it’s a place where everyone can fulfill their artistic dreams anytime, anywhere, without prejudice.
작가님만의 세계를 디자인할 수 있다면 어떤 모습일까요?
날씨는 항상 맑고 하늘은 하늘색과 핑크색이 뒤섞여있고 나무는 빽빽하고, 어딜가나 꽃이 피어있는 곳. 누구나 하늘을 날 수 있는 날개가 달려있고, 동물과 소통할수 있는 세계였음 좋겠어요. 또 언제 어디서나 편견 없이 예술의 꿈을 펼칠 수 있는 곳 이였으면 좋겠어요.
